Storage Hierarchy

FIT File Directory Structure & Extraction

Outdoor handhelds and multisport head units store recorded telemetry in binary Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer (FIT) files within the root directory /GARMIN/ACTIVITY/. When standard desktop communication fails, direct file extraction over USB Mass Storage or Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) serves as the primary recovery method for manual upload to Garmin Connect.

Each activity record utilizes a date-stamped naming convention encoded in hexadecimal or UTC timestamp format. System configuration profiles, sensor calibrations, and route segments are located in adjacent folders (/SETTINGS/, /COURSES/), which must not be modified during manual activity extraction. Refer to Map Update Operations for managing map image layers stored in /GARMIN/MAP/.

Warning: File System Write Policy

Do not format the internal flash volume via operating system format tools. FAT32 block allocation tables must remain intact to prevent permanent loss of device authorization keys.

Sync Queue Management

Pending payloads frequently lock inside the desktop client queue when metadata files become desynchronized. Purging the local directory located at %ProgramData%\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\UnitID\SyncQueue forces a clean transaction re-initialization on subsequent connection attempts.

Corrupt FIT File Repair

Abrupt battery depletion during track recording truncates the FIT file header and leaves CRC checksums unmatched. Running an offline binary repair pass through the official FIT SDK rebuilds the message definition chain and restores track point sequence data for upload processing.

Wi-Fi Auto-Upload Rules & Connectivity

Wireless sync requires an active 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz network provisioned with WPA2-Personal security. Enterprise encryption portals and 5 GHz bands are rejected at hardware level. Once configured, activities trigger automatic background transmission within 30 seconds of completing a recording session.
